Episode XXVIII: Migration and discrimination

Guest: Malika Bahovadinova, Lisa Gaufman

Step into our Yurt and join us for a monthly conversation on Europe-Central Asia developments. In this series of podcasts, we welcome guests from both regions to discuss exciting new research and the latest developments in Europe and Central Asia. Together, we discuss society trends, political developments, economic turns, and cultural highlights while assessing the past and looking ahead to what may unfold.

In this episode Rashid Gabdulhakov and Kamila Smagulova meet with Malika Bahovadinova, PhD., lecturer in International Studies at Universiteit Leiden and Lisa Gaufman, assistant professor of Russian discourse and politics at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Together they discuss the position of Tajik hashtaglabourmigrants in hashtagRussia. The guests explain how far-right groups in Russia have sought to dehumanise hashtagTajik workers and how labour migrants are regarded by the Russian bureaucracy. Also the different narratives of the terrorist attack on the Crocus theatre of 2024 are discussed. Lastly the way that labour migration has become part of Tajik society is debated and the small but increased number of Central Asian labour migrants who currently find their way to Western Europe. 👇
