Episode XVII – Cybersecurity

Step into our Yurt and join us for a monthly conversation on Europe-Central Asia developments. In this series of podcasts, we welcome guests from both regions to discuss exciting new research and the latest developments in Europe and Central Asia. Together, we discuss society trends, political developments, economic turns, and cultural highlights while assessing the past and looking ahead to what may unfold.

In this episode, hosts Rashid Gabdulhakov and Kamila Smagulova meet with Laylo Merali, a cybersecurity specialist from Central Asia, based in Geneva, and Anouk Vos, cybersecurity and innovation lead with Revnext, a company in the Netherlands. Laylo outlines the cybersecurity landscape in Central Asia while Anouk compares this to the Dutch and European approach in countering cybersecurity threats. Together they analyse the approaches that Central Asian countries have and discuss what actions could be taken by different groups – governments, ethical hackers, youth, academia, civil society – to bolster cybersecurity in Central Asia.  The chat concludes with an exchange on what privacy means to European and Central Asian societies and how this notion impacts the use of digital tools.
