Great Games, Local Rules: The New Great Power Contest in Central Asia
On 26 September FRIDE/EUCAM and the Open Society Foundations organised a short seminar with the participation of Alexander Cooley, author of a new book Great Games, Local Rules. Professor Cooley outlined the main features of the competition between the US, Russia and China in Central Asia, while Jos Boonstra, Head of the EUCAM programme outlined what role, if any, Europe plays in Central Asian with regard to large external powers. Alain Délétroz, Vice President (Europe) of the International Crisis Group also commented on the book and devoted specific attention to the ‘local rules’ aspect of politics in Central Asia.
The event was attended by European institutions and Member States representatives and the Brussels based think-tank community. The debate, moderated by Jacqueline Hale of OSF, evolved around the future of the countries in the region and perceptions of security and stability.
