American and European Policies in Central Asia: Similarities and Divergences
The FRIDE/EUCAM-CAP seminar ‘American and European Policies in Central Asia: Similarities and Divergences’ gathered policy-makers and experts from both sides of Atlantic, including Central Asia. The central topic of the discussion was the challenges faced by the Central Asian region in the view of the upcoming draw-dawn of the ISAF stoops from Afghanistan in 2014.
In the first panel four experts, Jos Boonstra of FRIDE; Alexander Cooley, Tow Professor, of Barnard College; Jeff Goldstein, Senior policy analyst for Eurasia, of Open Society Foundations; and Sebastien Peyrouse, Research Professor, of George Washington University discussed various aspects of Central Asian developments and the role of Brussels and Washington. Special attention was devoted to security matters, development policies, a values-based approach and trade. In the second panel the EU’s Special Representative for Central Asia, Patricia Flor and Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs (DOS), Lynne Tracy presented the common policy lines of the EU and the U.S. in Central Asia as well as divergences and options for coordination.
The seminar was organied by FRIDE’s Europe-Central Asia Monitoring (EUCAM) programme in cooperation with the Central Asia Program (CAP) of the IERES Elliott School of International Affairs, George Washington University, with the kind support of the Wider Europe Initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland.
