Training in media and security by Rashid Gabdulhakov.

On 4 June 2018, CESS staff together with our EUCAM fellows, took part in the ‘Media and Security’ workshop provided by Rashid Gabdulhakov, PhD candidate at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam. Rashid researches surveillance and citizen-led justice on social networks in the context of Russia.

The workshop dealt with the role of both traditional and digital media and their impact on security as well as economic and political developments in different countries. Fellows were introduced to several cases that illustrated the dynamic between different actors in media and security, including the state, media corporations, and citizens in their roles as information consumers and information broadcasters.

The fellows and other participants delivered case-studies of the media landscape and challenges in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Moldova, Italy and the Netherlands. The training session was highly interactive and a learning experience for all involved – definitely a good aspect to repeat in our fellowship programme and CESS training work.
